Greets Ambassador From Colombia
VATICAN CITY, FEB. 9, 2007 - Benedict XVI says that legislators should respect life, marriage and the family, issues that he says are of particular concern to him.
The Pope made this comment today on receiving the letters of credence of the new ambassador of Colombia to the Holy See, Juan Gómez Martínez. The ambassador has also served as the mayor of Medellin and governor of the state of Antioquia.
The Holy Father said: "As shepherd of the universal Church, I cannot but express my concern about the laws that regard very delicate questions such as the transmission and defense of life, sickness, the identity of the family and respect of marriage.
"On these topics, and in the light of natural reason, and of the moral and spiritual principles that stem from the Gospel, the Catholic Church will continue proclaiming ceaselessly the inalienable greatness of human dignity."
On this matter, the Pope appealed "to the responsibility of the laity present in legislative bodies, in the government and in the administration of justice, so that the laws will express always the principles and values that are in keeping with the natural law and that promote the genuine common good."

The trip was lovely, well worth the early (3:30 am) start. The ride started out OK until bus no. 15, our bus broke down. After fiddling with the engine for a while the driver decided he could not do a thing to get us going with this bus. An hour or so passed we got two vans instead and we where on the road again. It was already 6:30 am and we are far behind the other 14 buses but we still had the baby bus no. 16 behind us. We drove along the coast, we passed Klek, Neum, Dubrovnik and finally reached the Croatian - Montenegro border another 40 min. before we get to Kotor. The nice people on my van made the trip so much fun and as God provided us with the little speedy van we reached Kotor just a few minutes behind the other 14 buses. Praise GOD, we got there safe and sound and on time for the Holy Mass. Fr. Mika Stojic, the Dean of the Deanery of Brotnjo, a true Franciscan trooper, got us all there with our yellow caps. I got to say that we where quite distinctive. There where quite a few people there. They came from all over, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia… but the Deanery of Brotnjo, our Deanery, with our Franciscans and our yellow caps where the ones that occupied the town in the real sense of the word, there where 736 of us. Anyhow, it is time for me to stop writing “a picture is worth a thousand words” and I got quite of few of those. My friend Vlatka and her sister Tihana helped me quite a bit. It was the day of the Purification of the Virgin. I was in Foligno, in the church of the Minor Brothers. I heard a voice speaking to me, "This is the time when Mary, Virgin and Queen, came to the temple with her Son." I listened with great love in my soul. And having listened, I was charmed. Then, in my rapture I saw the Queen enter, and I went up to her, trembling with respect.

LISBON, Portugal, JAN. 30, 2007 - More than 15,000 people marched through the streets of Lisbon last Sunday to defend of life.
Marchers braved an early morning snow to promote a "no" vote in the upcoming Feb. 11 referendum.

Cardinal Dziwisz Recalls Details of Pontiff's Life VATICAN CITY, JAN. 25, 2007 - Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, who had been the longtime secretary of Pope John Paul II, reveals in a new book some details of the 40 years he spent as the close companion of Karol Wojtyla.
"A Life with Karol" is the title of the volume, written by journalist Gian Franco Svidercoschi, former deputy director of L'Osservatore Romano.
Svidercoschi also wrote "Karol's Story," which was broadcast on television as the film "Karol, the Man Who Became Pope."
The book is written in the form of a long conversation between Cardinal Dziwisz and Svidercoschi, in which the cardinal recalls the significant stages of the life of the one whom in the introduction he calls "father" and "teacher."

VATICAN CITY, JAN. 23, 2007. - In a message of sympathy, Benedict XVI expressed his gratitude for Abbé Pierre's commitment to charity. The founder of the Emmaus Community died Monday at 94.
In a telegram addressed to Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, archbishop of Bordeaux and president of the French episcopal conference, the Pope gives thanks for the abbot's "activity for the poorest, by which he bore witness to the charity that comes from Christ."
The papal message entrusts "to divine mercy this priest whose whole life was dedicated to fighting poverty."
The Holy Father sent his apostolic blessing "to the family of the departed, to members of the communities of Emmaus, and to everyone gathering for the funeral."
Emmaus International has 327 communities in 39 countries.

It is told in the Franciscan Chronicles that Brother Leon one day saw two ladders: a red one, on which Jesus-Christ stood; the other a white one where Mary was standing. He then saw souls who tried to climb the red ladder. They managed to go up a few rungs, but then fell; they kept trying again and again, but they always ended up falling down. Then one of them tried to climb the white ladder, and Brother Leon saw that they went up swiftly, because the Blessed Virgin lent them a hand.
