|Sister Inocenta Mara Vasilj, R.I.P.|
A great role model in my life and a great lady that had a hard life my dear great aunt Inocenta has passed on to the next world. She joined my sister, Fr. Slavko and others yesterday morning. We had the funeral mass and the burial ceremony this afternoon.
Sister Inocenta was one great and well respected member of the order of The School Sisters of St. Francis. She was born Aug. 24th 1920 to Iva and Stipe and as the oldest of eight children, she lived her early years in poverty and hunger, she joined the order 1939 and worked in Maribor (Slovenia), Virovitica (Croatia), Kresevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Bijelo Polje (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Zagreb (Croatia), Kiseljak (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and in 2001 she returned to the parish of her birth, Medjugorje where she lived until yesterday.
Sister Inocenta endured quite a bit in her life span, she was taken from Maribor (Slovenia) to the conc. camp, tortured and held in prison by the Communist Partisan army. After her release she was transferred to Virovitica (Croatia) and during that time the nuns were not able to do their work or wear their robes until late 80's. She lived her life full of optimism despite it all. She was surrounded in occupied city of Mostar in the church of St. Peter and Paul in the year of 2001 where she lived in the basement of the church for almost 4 months with one other nun and a priest before they were able to escape. Despite it all, she never lost faith and the optimism she radiated with.
After the sudden and tragic death of my sister Angelina, not to many things could make me cry, but the death of our dear "tetka" Inocenta has made me weep, although I know they are together now close to Him we are in sorrow.
May GOD give her eternal peace and rest that she so deserves.
Holy Mass was celebrated at the convent in Miletina followed by a procession to the Srebrenica (silver chapel) where the burial took place. The funeral was attended by most of sisters of her order and numerous priests from our diocese with relatives and friends, total number of 800+ people.
