The Apparitions continue…
After the eighth day, the Virgin appeared several times in the rectory of the parish church of Medjugorje. Subsequently, because of the large crowds, the site of the apparitions settled on the hillside, where the Virgin continued to appear daily - until August 12, 1981 when the officials decreed that the hillside was off limits to everyone. The village of Bijakovici, the woods and fields, and at times the homes of the children became the sites where everyone gathered to pray and await Our Lady. Together with Our Lady, the children formed a prayer group, and besides instructing them, she joined them in singing and praying. In these early days, the gatherings for the apparitions begin with prayers recommended by Our Lady: seven Our Fathers, seven Hail Marys, and seven Glorias. The children begin these prayers before there is any sign that the Virgin will appear; then, usually at the second or third Our Father, they fall to their knees. This happens at the instant Our Lady appears. The children's faces turn together as their eyes converge on one spot, about 8 feet away from them, near a crucifix. Immediately before Our Lady appears - according to the children's testimony - they see a light, from which she emerges. The children say that all contact with and aware¬ness of the material world is suspended during their visions. Those who are present at the visions cannot hear what is spoken between Our Lady and the children, although they see the children's lips move as they speak. They also see the children's eyes, which are bright and joyous, even if previously they'd been sad or|suffering from some illness. Immediately after the visions, the children write the messages or answers they have received from Lady, for themselves and for petitioners. If there is something special to say, they converse with the people, especially with the sick and ill. The visions usually last from 2 to 15 minutes, though some have lasted 45 minutes. As time goes on… The life of the visionaries and the world around them has undergone much change. Soon after the fall of communism, a tragic war took place in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Croatian people established their own state for the first time since they lost it in the 11th century. In the meantime, the Catholics of Bosnia-Herzegovina experienced the most tragic exodus in their history their number was reduced by half. The visionaries have grown up in the midst of these extraordinary circumstances. All are now married and live an ordinary family life. Observing the visionaries, one may notice their decisive commitment to work and witness for Our Lady. Their commitment is not hindered by fear of public opinion, pressures, expectations or any other imposed human condition. In their relaxed and confident way, the visionaries keep their freedom intact. The mentality of the visionaries during these years of special spiritual calling has been kept rooted into the local mentality of their own people. People are impressed as to how normal and human they are. When Our Lady calls Her children, She keeps their free will miraculously intact and lets everyone walk on their own ordinary human way. The messages of Our Lady are simple and have not changed: peace, conversion, faith, prayer, and penance and fasting. These messages are meant for the entire world, and the six visionaries have been given a special responsibility to convey them.
